The first season
Surprising top three result
The first season after the founding was a reasonably successful season. In the inauguration season in the New Zealand Football Championship, they finished third after a poor start at the end of the season.
Waikato's first competitive game was away at YoungHeart Manawatu , which they won 4-0 and thus took the lead. Unfortunately, they only won one of the next nine games, dropping them to seventh on the table. Then they won five games in a row, one of them away against championship favorites Auckland City . In the rest of the season they only lost two games and thus fought for third place and thus a place in the "Elimination Final" of the playoffs against Waitakere United . Waikato lost that game 4-1 at Trusts Stadium, Auckland . This defeat put an end to hopes for the championship title.
