The first season

Surprising top three result

The first season after the founding was a reasonably successful season. In the inauguration season in the New Zealand Football Championship, they finished third after a poor start at the end of the season.

Waikato's first competitive game was away at YoungHeart Manawatu , which they won 4-0 and thus took the lead. Unfortunately, they only won one of the next nine games, dropping them to seventh on the table. Then they won five games in a row, one of them away against championship favorites Auckland City . In the rest of the season they only lost two games and thus fought for third place and thus a place in the "Elimination Final" of the playoffs against Waitakere United . Waikato lost that game 4-1 at Trusts Stadium, Auckland . This defeat put an end to hopes for the championship title.

Awards

Craig Flowerday was voted Player of the Year by the players and goalkeeper Mark Fulcher by the fans. David Samson was named Young Player of the Year. Striker Colin Gardyne won the Sky Sports Goal of the Year trophy. He was also Waikato's top scorer, along with Brett Derry.
