Che Bunce (born August 29, 1975 in Auckland ) is a former New Zealand soccer player. The defender won the 1998 Oceania championship with the New Zealand national team and has worked in Denmark, England, Ireland, Iceland and New Zealand over the course of his career.
Club career
Bunce began his career in 1992 at the English club Sheffield United , but stayed there without league use and returned to New Zealand in 1995. After two years with Napier City Rovers , he moved to Icelandic club Breiðablik UBK for three years in early 1997 . In 1999 he returned to New Zealand and played for three seasons with the newly formed club Football Kingz , which participated in the Australian National Soccer League .
In early 2003, a six-month stint at Irish club Drogheda United followed before he was under contract for one season with Danish second division Randers FC . From 2004 to 2006 he played for Waikato FC in the New Zealand Football Championship . For the 2006/07 season he returned to the Football Kingz, who now played under the name New Zealand Knights in the A-League . As captain, he played 19 of the 21 league games before the team was disbanded at the end of the season.
Bunce signed a contract with English second division club Coventry City shortly after the end of the season at the end of January , but remained without use until his contract ended in summer 2007. The 2007/08 season he played again for Waikato FC, in summer 2008 he moved to league rivals Hawke's Bay United . He returned after a year and ended his career in 2010.
National team
Bunce played 29 times for the New Zealand senior team between 1998 and 2007 , scoring 2 goals. In 1998 and 2000 he was with New Zealand in the final of the OFC Nations Cup . While they beat Australia 1-0 in 1998, they lost 2 years later with 0-2.
Due to the success of 1998 they were also qualified for the 1999 Confederations Cup . In the preliminary round of the All Whites there, Bunce came to his only tournament appearance in the last group game against Brazil.
