Raimo Kangro

Raimo Kangro (born September 21, 1949 in Tartu , †  February 4, 2001 in Ruila ) was an Estonian composer.

life and work

Raimo Kangro studied composition at the Tallinn State Conservatory (now the Estonian Music and Theater Academy ) until 1973 , initially with Jaan Rääts and later with Eino Tamberg . In 1975/76 he was musical director for Estonian television . From 1977 to 1985 he was a consultant to the Composers' Association of the Estonian SSR ( Eesti NSV Heliloojate Liit ). From 1993 he was director of the Estonian Music Foundation ( Eesti Muusikafond ). From 1989 he taught composition at the Estonian Music Academy, since 1993 with the title of lecturer.

Raimo Kangro is best known internationally as a composer. Kangro was one of the most prolific chamber music composers in Estonia. His music is described as powerful and impulsive. His works are mostly full of rhythmic energy and with a great feeling for tone colors.

In 1982 Raimo Kangro was awarded the State Prize of the Estonian SSR, in 1994 the title of Honored Artist of the Estonian SSR and in 1996 the Culture Prize of the Republic of Estonia .

In addition, Kangro wrote, among other things, three concertos for two pianos (1978, 1988, 1992), a flute, two piano, a violin and a bassoon concerto, a piano trio as well as numerous stage and film scores.

Private life

Raimo Kangro was married to the Estonian writer Leelo Tungal (* 1947). Her daughter is the writer Maarja Kangro (* 1973).
