James Bannatyne (born June 30, 1975 in Lower Hutt ) is a former New Zealand soccer goalkeeper who has been with the Wellington team since 2006 and has played in the New Zealand national soccer team since 2001 . He won the OFC Nations Cup in 2002 with the selection of his home country when he came on for Jason Batty in the 58th minute .

Career

From 1988 to 1997 Bannatyne played for an amateur club from Petone , a suburb of his birthplace Lower Hutt in New Zealand. After nine years he moved to the Miramar Rangers from a suburb of Wellington . He played there until 2001 and signed a contract with the Football Kingz from Auckland that summer . 2002 followed a short engagement with the Miramar Rangers, then he played again for the Football Kingz. In 2005 Bannatyne moved to Canterbury United , and has been with the Wellington team since the summer of 2006. He caused a stir in February 2009 when he took a free kick 15 meters from the center line in the game against Canterbury United and converted it directly into the goal.

For the national team of his country Bannatyne was in goal three times between 2001 and 2002, in 2002 he won the OFC Nations Cup. He was nominated for both the Confederations Cup 2009 and the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa as the third goalkeeper in the New Zealand team, but was not used in the tournaments or in qualifying.
