Josef Strnadel

Josef Strnadel (born February 23, 1912 in Trojanovice , † March 4, 1986 in Prague ) was a Czech writer, translator and literary theorist.

Life

Strnadel was a nephew of the sculptor Jan Knebl and the brother of Bohumír , Antonín and Václav Strnadel. After attending the Realgymnasium in Místek and the Mature in Brno, he began studying the Czech and French languages, phonetics, ethnography and literature at the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University in Prague in 1931 . In 1937 Strnadel finished his studies and after working for various authorities he took over the management of the library of the Ministry of Social Welfare in 1939. In 1942 his Czech translation of Arthur Schopenhauer's On Writing and Style was published in Prague under the title Spisovatelům a čtenářům . During the German occupation, Strnadel was temporarily deported to a concentration camp. After the end of the war he returned to his old office. He also worked from 1944 to 1949 as an editor for the Josef Lukasík publishing house.

In 1945 Strnadel published his first novel Rok pod horami . In 1946 he did his PhD. Between 1952 and 1957 he taught as a lecturer at the chair for library science at Charles University. Strnadel worked from 1956 to 1977 as director of the Slavic Library in Prague.

Strnad published a cycle of lyrical stories from Moravian Wallachia . He was also the author of several scientific and folkloric works, author of bibliographies and translated from Polish, Russian and German into Czech. Most of the books about his brother Antonín Strnadel were illustrated.
