Antonín Strnadel

Antonín Strnadel (born May 10, 1910 in Trojanovice , † October 31, 1975 in Prague ) was a Czech painter , graphic artist and book illustrator.

Life

Strnadel was a nephew of the sculptor Jan Knebl and the brother of Bohumír , Josef and Václav Strnadel. From 1927 to 1933 he studied painting and graphics with Jaroslav Benda and Max Švabinský at the Prague Art School and then worked until 1936 as Benda's assistant at the Academy of Fine Arts . Between 1935 and 1936 he ran a studio in Nový Hrozenkov . He then worked as an art teacher. In 1946, Strnadel was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts as Benda's successor. In 1947 he created the frescoes in the Hotel Vlčina in Frenštát pod Radhoštěm . In 1970 he gave up teaching for health reasons. In the same year Strnadel was awarded the National Artist award.

In 1976 Strnadel was posthumously included in the list of honor for the Hans Christian Andersen Prize for the illustrations for U veselého věnce by Josef Strnadel . He illustrated over 240 books, including the work of his brother Josef.

There are memorials in his studio in Nový Rozenkov and his birth house in Trojanovice.
