Max Švabinský (born September 17, 1873 in Kroměříž , † February 10, 1962 in Prague ) was a Czech painter and graphic artist .

Max Švabinský was born on September 17, 1873 in Kroměříž. Together with Jan Preisler , Antonín Slavíček and Miloš Jiránek , he was one of the founders of modern Czech art. At the beginning of the 20th century, Švabinský and his wife Ela often stayed with the Vejrych family in Kozlov near Česká Třebová . There he was inspired to many of his landscape paintings. At this time he painted some of his most famous works, such as "Poor Region". Due to the high quality of his graphic work, he was appointed professor at the Prague Art Academy in 1910 . He also designed many Czechoslovak postage stamps , including the very common definitive stamps with a portrait of President Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk . In 1945 he received the honorary title of national artist and the right to use a studio in the Prague Art Academy for life. He died in Prague on February 10, 1962.
