Career

Youth and college

Oughton attended the University of Otago before moving to California State University Fullerton in 1997 . In his senior year at Cal State, he scored 17 goals and set up 8 more.

Columbus crew

In 2001 he was selected as the 10th pick by the Columbus crew in the MLS SuperDraft. In his first season he was able to assert himself on the pitch, this was due to the fact that he could be used both in midfield and in defense. He was on the field a total of 20 times, 12 of them from the beginning. He missed the 2005 season due to a knee injury and was released from the crew in May 2006. But he continued to train with the team and was re-signed in August 2006.

In the years to come, Oughton was less and less on the pitch. In 2006 he played only 9 games in the MLS, in 2008 only five.

After the 2010 season, his contract was no longer renewed. Even with the MLS Re-Entry Draft 2010, where already active MLS players can find a new team, he was unable to win a new team.

On February 3, 2011, he announced his retirement from active football and became the new Assistant Technical Director at Columbus.

National team

For the New Zealand national soccer team , he completed his first international match at the 2002 Oceania Cup , in the first group match against Tahiti. In total, he played 25 times for the New Zealanders.

During 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup and 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup he was part of the squad. In 2009 he played his last game against South Africa.

Career as a coach

After retiring as an active player, Oughton became assistant coach and assistant to the technical director for the Columbus Crew. He also worked as a commentator for regional television stations Ohio News Network and Fox Sports Ohio.

During the 2013 season he moved to Toronto FC, where he is also the team's assistant coach.

He holds the Coach B license from the United States Soccer Federation .
