Benjamin "Ben" Sigmund (born February 3, 1981 in Blenheim ) is a New Zealand soccer player . He competes for the A-League club Wellington Phoenix .

Club career

2001 Sigmund played for Christchurch City and reached the semi-finals of the Chatham Cup with the club . In 2002 he was used in a game of the National Soccer League on the part of the New Zealand club Football Kingz . No information is available for the next three years, in 2005/06 he played for Canterbury United , in 2006 he moved to Auckland City , where he played for the following two years (in the summer break of 2007 he kept fit with Fawkner Blues ). He took part in the 2006 FIFA Club World Cup, in which Auckland finished last after two defeats.

In the 2006/07 season he won the New Zealand championship with Auckland and was in the 3-2 final win over Waitakere United on the grid. At the end of November 2007 he was voted “ NZFC player of the year”.

In April 2008 he signed his first professional contract with New Zealand A-League club Wellington Phoenix .

National team

Sigmund took part in 1997 with the New Zealand U-17 selection in the U-17 World Cup in Egypt and came in the preliminary round to two missions.

In 2000 he made his debut in the New Zealand senior team against Oman. It was only in May 2008 that he was reassigned to the national team against Wales. He was then part of the winning squad during the OFC Nations Cup 2008 and qualified through the success for the Confederations Cup in 2009 and also for the playoff games against the Asian representative for the 2010 World Cup. His first international goal was achieved in September 2008 in a 3-1 win against New Caledonia.
