Jacob Spoonley (born March 3, 1987 in Palmerston North ) is a New Zealand football goalkeeper .
Career
Club career
The goalkeeper began his active career as a football goalkeeper in 2004 with Otago United and moved to Auckland City FC for the first time the following year. After more than two years, he transferred to Wellington Phoenix in the A-League , where he stayed without a competitive game in the 2007/08 season . After the season ended, Spoonley was released from his contract. In 2008 he was under contract for the Miramar Rangers for a short time , but moved again to Auckland City FC in the same year. With Auckland he won the national championship in 2009, the OFC Champions League in 2009, 2011 and 2012 and participated in the 2009 FIFA Club World Cup , which Auckland finished in fifth place, and the 2011 FIFA Club World Cup. In October 2012, Wellington Phoenix signed Spoonley for a game after both Wellington goalkeepers ( Mark Paston and Glen Moss ) were with the national team. In the game against Melbourne Heart (final score 1: 1) he contributed with several parades to a surprising point gain. In November 2013 he played again for Wellington Phoenix. In the game against Brisbane Roar he received a yellow card after 41 minutes . Wellington lost the game 2-1.
After his contract with Phoenix expired, he moved to city rival Team Wellington in 2013 . So Spoonley no longer plays in the Australian A-League , but again in the New Zealand Football Championship .
National team
Spoonley took part in the 2007 Junior World Cup with the U-20 national team. As a regular goalkeeper, he prevented further goals with his saves in the three preliminary round defeats and is highlighted in the technical report as a “quick-reacting goalkeeper with good positional play”. In August 2008, the Olympic team took part in the Olympic soccer tournament in China and was the goalkeeper in all three games during the preliminary round. For the New Zealand senior team , Spoonley has sat on the bench several times since 2007, but only came on for the first time in November 2008 in a 2-0 defeat against the Fiji Islands when he replaced the relegated Glen Moss in goal.
In 2007 Spoonley was named New Zealand's best young player (under 20) and was named “Young men's player of the year”.
