Tony James Lochhead (born January 12, 1982 in Tauranga ) is a New Zealand football player .
Club career
In 2001 Lochhead went to the United States to study at the University of California, Santa Barbara, to study chemical engineering. He also played in the university's soccer team, the gauchos , for which he was a key player. In 2004 he played for some time with Orange County Blue Star in the USL Premier Development League before he signed up for the MLS SuperDraft 2005 and was selected in the 3rd round in 33rd place by New England Revolution .
Elected to New Zealand's International Young Player in 2004 , the defender signed a professional contract with New England in September 2005 and made 16 appearances in the 2006 season . In the play-offs, in which New England Revolution advanced to the finals, he was not included. In April 2007 he was released from his club to create a place for the previously drafted Bryan Byrne .
A month later he signed a two-year contract with the newly formed New Zealand A-League team Wellington Phoenix . Overall, Lochhead stayed with the team until 2013. He scored 1 goal in 131 games.
In December 2013 he moved back to Major League Soccer and from then on played for CD Chivas USA . After the team was dissolved at the end of 2014, he is without a club.
National team
Lochhead represented the New Zealand U-17 selection at the 1999 U-17 World Cup in New Zealand. He was used in all three preliminary round games, including the surprising 2-1 success in the last group game against Poland. In qualifying for the 2004 Olympic tournament in Greece, Lochhead played in the U-23 selection, but participation in the final tournament was missed in the play-offs against the Australian team.
In 2003 he made his senior national team debut in a friendly against Iran and has since become a regular. By winning the OFC Nations Cup in 2008 , they qualified for the Confederations Cup in 2009 in South Africa and at the same time for the play-offs against the fifth in Asia for the 2010 World Cup.
