Andrew Boyens (born September 18, 1983 in Dunedin ) is a New Zealand football player .
Career
Club career
Boyens played for Dunedin Technical in New Zealand before moving to the United States to study at the University of New Mexico and play on the college team there, the Lobos. In 2006 he was elected to the College All-Star Team ( First Team All-American ) by the NCAA .
After the 2006 college season, he played briefly in New Zealand for Otago United before being selected 10th in the 1st round in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft by Toronto FC . In his first professional season he came to a total of 23 missions, 21 of them on the starting grid. Shortly after the start of the 2008 season, Boyens was surprisingly released from his contract in mid-April 2008 by Toronto.
He signed a new contract with the league competitor, the New York Red Bulls, in early May after a trial session. The NYRB reached the championship finals that season, but were subject to Columbus Crew . Boyens could only play until the quarterfinals during the play-offs; a broken forearm brought the season to an early end.
On January 28, 2011, Red Bull announced that they are no longer planning with Boyens for the 2011 season. The soccer franchise had previously presented him with a new contract, to which Boyens had not responded.
On February 9, 2011 he switched to the CD Chivas USA .
National team
Boyens was first called up to the New Zealand national team in February 2006 , but was not used in the three friendly matches against Malaysia. He made his debut in a friendly against Wales in May 2007. Boyens made four appearances in the oceanic qualification for the 2010 World Cup. By winning the group in the Oceania Group, they also won the OFC Nations Cup 2008 and qualified for the Confederations Cup 2009 .
