David Mulligan (born March 24, 1982 in Fazakerley , Liverpool , England ) is a New Zealand football player .
Club career
Mulligan was playing in France for a New Zealand U-16 team in 1998 when he and teammate Rory Fallon spotted a Barnsley FC scout and were drawn into the club's youth academy. In 2000 he moved up to the professional field of the English second division. After three years and the interim relegation to the third division, the club did not extend its contract in October 2003 after financial problems. Mulligan found a new club in February 2004 with the Doncaster Rovers , where he quickly established himself after his commitment and rose to the third division as a fourth division champion at the end of the season. In the summer of 2006 he moved to third division competitor Scunthorpe United . While he was still regularly used in his first season at Scunthorpe and was promoted to the Football League Championship , he played no role in the following season under Nigel Adkins .
At the end of August 2007 he was awarded to fourth division Grimsby Town for a month before third division Port Vale agreed to take over his contract, which ran until the end of the season, in early January. After his contract expired, he signed a two-year contract with New Zealand club Wellington Phoenix in the summer of 2008 .
National team
Mulligan was part of the New Zealand U-17 squad at the U-17 World Cup in their own country in 1999 . He was used in two of three group games, in the 1: 2 defeat against the USA he managed the interim opening goal. In the following years Mulligan also played in the U-20 and U-23 selection before making his international debut in the New Zealand senior team against Estonia in 2002 . In 2002 he was also elected New Zealand's International Young Player .
In 2003 he was part of New Zealand's squad at the Confederations Cup , but was not used in the preliminary round. In qualifying for the 2010 World Cup, Mulligan scored his only international goal within four days in the two games against Vanuatu. With the victory of the oceanic qualifying round you won the OFC Nations Cup 2008 and qualified for the Confederations Cup 2009 , in which Mulligan was also part of the squad.
