Nigel Howard Adkins (born March 11, 1965 in Birkenhead ) is a former English football player and current coach .
Player career
After spending the first three years of his career at fourth division Tranmere Rovers , Adkins moved to Wigan Athletic in 1986 . With his new team, he just missed promotion to the second division in the 1986/87 season as fourth. In the following six years he played with Wigan in the third division before the club was relegated to the fourth division in 1992/93 as the penultimate.
Coaching career
Bangor City (1993-1996)
After relegation with Wigan, he moved as a player-coach to the Welsh club Bangor City and directly won the league title in the League of Wales 1993/94 . After defending his title in 1994/95 , Adkins finished the 1995/96 season with Bangor in fourth.
Scunthorpe United (2006-2010)
On November 6, 2006 Adkins took over the interim coaching position at the English third division Scunthorpe United , where he succeeded Brian Laws . A month later he officially took up the post as head coach of the Scunthorpe team. Adkins had worked for the club since 1996 as a physiotherapist and fitness trainer. In his first season as coach, Adkins led United to the 2006/07 Football League One championship , thanks in part to thirty goals from Billy Sharp . However, the newly promoted only spent a year in the Football League Championship 2007/08 before relegation to the third division took place as the penultimate. After Scunthorpe reached the play-off entry only on the last day of the 2008/09 season, the team prevailed in the final with 3-2 against Millwall and managed direct promotion to the second division. In the 2009/10 season United reached top scorer Gary Hooper (19 league goals) in twentieth the relegation.
Southampton FC (2010-2013)
During the first half of the 2010/11 season, Nigel Adkins moved to the ambitious third division club Southampton FC on September 12, 2010 and led his new team in Football League One 2010/11 as runners-up behind Brighton & Hove Albion in the second division. At the end of the 2011/12 season, he rose with his team in the Premier League .
On January 18, 2013, Adkins was sacked by Southampton FC.
Reading FC (2013-2014)
On March 26, 2013, English first division FC Reading, threatened with relegation, announced the commitment of Nigel Adkins as their new coach. After relegation from the Premier League in 2012/13 , Adkins Reading led in the Football League Championship 2013/14 to seventh place in the table and thus just missed a place in the play-offs. A significant deterioration in performance in the first half of the 2014/15 season led to the dismissal of Adkins on December 15, 2014.
Sheffield United (2015-2016)
At the beginning of the 2015/16 season, Nigel Adkins took over the vacant coaching position at the third division club Sheffield United .
