Hay began his career in New Zealand, where he was named Young Player of the Year in 1996 , before moving to Perth Glory in Australia in 1997 . In his two seasons with Perth Glory he received the Most Glorious Player Award . In 1999 he moved to English first division club Leeds United for a fee of £ 200,000 . There he only made four league appearances in the 2000/01 season, including the 4-3 wins against Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool. In the summer of 2002 Hay moved to the English second division club FC Walsall on a free transfer before returning to New Zealand in early 2004 "for personal reasons".
There he joined the Football Kingz , who participated in the professional league A-League in 2005 under the name New Zealand Knights as the only New Zealand club . Starting the season as captain, he fell out with management in November and left the club in January 2006 and played the rest of the season at Perth Glory.
With Waitakere United he found a new club in 2006, with which he was able to win the first OFC Champions League against Ba FC and that although they only got a starting place after the withdrawal of the Vanuatu representative. However, he missed the decisive final second leg due to injury. As captain, he led his team onto the field at the 2007 FIFA Club World Cup , but had to admit defeat to Asian representative Sepahan 1: 3 in the preliminary round. In 2008 the success in the Champions League could be repeated. In the final, after a 3-1 first leg defeat in the second leg against Kossa FC , they prevailed 5-0. He also led as captain Waitakere United to win the New Zealand Championship for the first time . In the final, they defeated Team Wellington 2-0.
National team
Hay made his debut for New Zealand's senior team in 1998 . In the same year he won the OFC Nations Cup with a 1-0 victory over Australia.
