die out

The distribution of the Gull meadow vole was limited to the 7 hectare Great Gull Island at the entrance to Long Island Sound . In 1897, the US Army began building the Fort Michie fortification, completely destroying the habitat of the gull vole and many terns. In August 1898 the zoologist Arthur Holmes Howell visited the island and could no longer prove any more specimens. 15 copies are in the collection of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service . In 1981, the mainland meadow vole was released on Great Gull Island.
