Vaughan Coveny (born December 13, 1971 in Wellington ) is a retired New Zealand soccer player . Coveny is the top scorer for the New Zealand national soccer team .

Club career

Coveny began his active career with two local clubs in New Zealand and moved to Australia in 1992 in the National Soccer League (NSL). After seasons with Melbourne CSC and the Wollongong City Wolves , he played for South Melbourne from 1995 on . In addition to two Australian championships, the striker won the Oceania Club Championship 1999 with South Melbourne with a 5-1 win over Fijian representatives Nadi FC ; Coveny was once successful as a scorer in the final. The win qualified the team for the 2000 FIFA Club World Cup in Brazil. In each of the three games against Manchester United , Necaxa and CR Vasco da Gama , Coveny came to partitions.

After the NSL was discontinued in 2004, he initially stayed with South Melbourne in the Victorian Premier League as he had no offer from an A-League club. Only in the course of the premiere season he was signed on loan from the Newcastle United Jets . After four goals in a total of ten missions, he received a permanent contract with Newcastle for the next season. The 2006/07 season was initially rather disappointing for Coveny, with only three goals in 18 games in the regular season. In the finals, his goal in the second leg against Sydney helped the Jets to reach the Preliminary Finals , where he scored the 1-1 equalizer against Adelaide United. In the subsequent penalty shoot-out they failed 3: 4, with Coveny also being among the missers.

For the 2007/08 season he signed a two-year contract in his hometown with the newly formed New Zealand professional team Wellington Phoenix . After only sporadic appearances in the second season at Wellington, he announced his retirement from professional football in 2009 and returned to Australia to South Melbourne.

National team

Coveny made his debut for the New Zealand national team in June 1992 in a game against the Fiji Islands and moved into the regular formation in 1995. In 1998 he won the OFC Nations Cup with a 1-0 win over Australia with the New Zealand selection . In 1999 and 2003 he played all six games in the Confederations Cup for New Zealand . In total, he came to 64 senior internationals and 28 goals in the course of his national team career. Since Coveny never played in Europe - he failed during trial training with Celtic Glasgow (1992) and Watford FC (1994) - he was regularly available for the national team. He played his last international matches during the European tour in the summer of 2006. He helped the New Zealand selection win their first victory on European soil with two goals in a 3-1 win over Georgia and ended his career after the friendly against the then reigning world champions Brazil on 4. June 2006.
