The third South Asian Football Federation Championship , officially South Asian Football Federation Cup in 1997 , was held from 9 to 13. September 1997 in Kathmandu in Nepal instead. Six South Asian nations took part in the tournament. India became South Asian champions in 1997 with a 5-1 win over the Maldives . Pakistan finished third with a win against defending champions Sri Lanka . The Maldives took part in the SAFF Cup for the first time.

The venue for the third South Asia Football Federation Cup was the Nepalese capital Kathmandu . It was the first hosting of the SAFF Cup and an international football nations tournament in Nepal. The venue for all tournament games was the Dasarath Rangasala Stadium in Kathmandu.
