Copa Popular 2014

The Copa Popular 2014 was the 43rd edition of the Torneo de Copa de Costa Rica , the national cup competition of Costa Rica . It was organized by the UNAFUT league association on behalf of FEDEFUTBOL (Costa Rican Football Association). Participants were both clubs of the Liga de Fútbol de Primera División (FPD) and the Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División . Cartago was able to win the cup competition for the fourth time, after more than 40 years without any national title win.

For the Copa Popular all clubs of the Liga de Fútbol de Primera División 2013/14 , as well as five teams of the second-rate Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División 2013/14 qualified for the relegated team . These were the champions and climbers, as well as the best clubs in the North, Pacific, Guanacaste and Caribbean geographic areas.

Competition mode

First, the sixteen participating clubs were divided into four groups according to geographical criteria, with three first division teams and one second division team per group. Each team plays three games in the group stage, with all teams meeting each other only once. A drawing was drawn to determine which clubs have two and which only one home game.

The four group winners then played back and forth in the semi-finals for the final.

The final was contested in a single game by both semi-final winners, the winner of this encounter became the 43rd Costa Rican Cup winner.

financing

The tournament was mainly financed by the main sponsor Banco Popular and the secondary sponsor Kölbi. In addition, ticket sales were carried out centrally by the UNAFUT league association and the proceeds went into the same pot. In addition, UNAFUT provides parts of its annual budget.

The logistics (renting the stadium, transport, etc.) and the prize money were financed from the income from sponsoring and ticket sales.
