Tony Rundle

Anthony "Tony" Maxwell Rundle AO (born March 5, 1939 in Scottsdale , Tasmania , Australia ) is an Australian politician of the Liberal Party of Australia and former Prime Minister of Tasmania .

Life

Tony Rundle began his political career as a candidate for the Liberal Party in 1986 with his election as a member of the House of Assembly of Tasmania for the constituency of Braddon , in which he was re-elected in 1989, 1992, 1996 and 1998.

Immediately after his entry into parliament, Whip became the faction of the government in 1986 , before he was speaker of the Assembly House between 1988 and 1989 and thus President of Parliament. After the Liberal Party's electoral defeat in 1989, he was appointed to the party's shadow cabinet and was shadow minister for tourism and transport until 1992.

After the Liberals won the elections for the Assembly House again in 1992, he was appointed by Prime Minister Ray Groom to his cabinet in February 1992 and was initially Minister for Forests, Mines and Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister for Economic Development until 1993. As part of a cabinet reshuffle he had from 1993 to 1998 important post of Treasury Minister ( Treasurer held) and was also well 1993-1996 Finance . In addition, he was Minister for Management in the Public Sector from 1993 to 1994 and Minister for Employment and Minister for Racing Competitions and Gambling between 1993 and 1995. He was also Minister of Energy from 1995 to 1996.

On March 18, 1996, he succeeded Ray Groom himself and finally became Prime Minister of Tasmania, taking on the position of Minister for State Development in addition to the office of Treasury Minister. After the election defeat of his Liberal Party, he had to cede the office of Prime Minister on September 14, 1998 to Jim Bacon of the Australian Labor Party . He himself remained the leader of the opposition until 1999 .

Shortly before the House of Assembly elections in July 2002, he resigned his parliamentary mandate and withdrew from politics.
