Jim Bacon

James "Jim" Alexander Bacon (born May 15, 1950 in Melbourne , Victoria , † June 20, 2004 in Hobart , Tasmania ) was an Australian politician of the Australian Labor Party (ALP), who was Prime Minister of Tasmania between 1998 and 2004 .

Life

Bacon completed his schooling in Victoria, where the future Prime Minister of Victoria Jeff Kennett was one of his classmates.

As a candidate of the Australian Labor Party, he was elected for the first time on February 24, 1996 in the Denison constituency as a member of the House of Representatives (Tasmanian House of Assembly) , the lower house of the Tasmanian Parliament, and was a member of this until his resignation on March 21, 2004.

A year later he became opposition leader in 1997 and Prime Minister of Tasmania on September 14, 1998. He replaced Tony Rundle from the Liberal Party of Australia . In addition to the prime minister, he took in his cabinet of 18 September 1998 to 9 August 2002, the Office of the Minister for State Development (Minister for State Development) . In the previous parliamentary elections on August 29, 1998, his party received 131,981 votes (44.79 percent), while the Liberal Party got 112,146 votes (38.06 percent). Since the House of Assembly had been reduced from 35 to 25 seats, Labor had an absolute majority with 14 seats.

In the elections of July 20, 1992, his party was able to maintain its 14 seats with 153,798 (51.88 percent), while the Liberal Party only got 81,185 votes (27.38 votes) and lost three of its ten seats. In these parliamentary elections he himself achieved the highest result in the Denison constituency to date with 21,391 votes (35.3 percent) . After the election, he took in his government of 9 August 2002 to 21 March 2004, the office as Minister for the Arts (Minister for the Arts) as well as Minister of Tourism, Parks and Heritage (Minister for Tourism, Parks and Heritage ) .

After he was diagnosed with lung cancer on February 13, 2004 , the previous Vice Prime Minister and Minister for Economic Development, Energy and Resources and Minister for Racing, Sports and Recreation, Paul Lennon , took over the post of Prime Minister on February 23, 2004 before he officially took over this position on March 21, 2004 after Bacon's resignation.

After his death, a state memorial service was held in the Federation Concert Hall on June 24, 2004 .
