Michael Field (politician)

Michael Walter Field AC (born May 28, 1948 in Latrobe , Tasmania ) is an Australian politician of the Australian Labor Party (ALP), who was Prime Minister of Tasmania between 1989 and 1992 .

Life

Field completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Tasmania after attending school , graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA).

As a candidate for the Australian Labor Party, he was elected for the first time on December 11, 1976 in the Braddon constituency as a member of the House of Representatives (Tasmanian House of Assembly) , the lower house of the Tasmanian Parliament, and belonged to it for more than twenty years until his resignation on July 3, 1997 long on. During the tenures of Prime Ministers Doug Lowe and Harry Holgate , he was Minister for Local Government from 1979 to 1982, including until his replacement by Harry Holgate in 1981 .

After he was opposition leader from 1988 to 1989 , he became Prime Minister of Tasmania on June 29, 1989, successor to Robin Gray of the Liberal Party of Australia . In the previous parliamentary election on May 13, 1989, his party received 90,003 votes (34.71 percent) and although it lost one of its 14 seats in the 35-member House of Assembly, it formed a loose alliance with the Tasmanian Greens , which received five seats which became known as the Labor Green Accord .

He held the post of Prime Minister until February 17, 1992 and was then replaced by Ray Groom of the Liberal Party of Australia. In the previous parliamentary elections on February 1, 1992, the Liberal Party won 154,337 votes (54.11 percent) and got 19 seats, while Fields Labor Party lost 5.86 percentage points and with 82,296 votes (28.85 percent) only eleven of those 35 MPs in the House of Assembly. He was then again leader of the opposition and held this position until his resignation on July 3, 1997. He was succeeded by Jim Bacon .

For his longstanding service, Field was named Companion of the Order of Australia on June 9, 2003 .
