Sir Edward Nicholas Coventry Braddon KCMG (born June 11, 1829 in St. Kew , Cornwall , England , † February 2, 1904 in Leith , Tasmania) was an Australian Free Trade Party politician who was Prime Minister of Tasmania between 1894 and 1899 .

Life

Member of Parliament, Minister and General Representative in London

Braddon, an older brother of the English writer Mary Elizabeth Braddon , emigrated to India in 1847 and later to Tasmania .

He was elected in the elections on July 31, 1879 in the constituency of West Devon for the first time as a member of the House of Representatives (Tasmanian House of Assembly) , the lower house of the Tasmanian parliament, and was a member of this until his resignation on October 29, 1888, where he has been since Represented the Free Trade Party in 1880.

During his membership in parliament he was opposition leader between 1886 and 1887 , before he was appointed to a government of the state for the first time on March 30, 1887 by the liberal Prime Minister Philip Fysh as Minister for Lands and Works and held this position until October 29, 1888.

Shortly before he left government and parliament, he became the agent general of Tasmania in the United Kingdom on October 1, 1888, and remained in this post until September 30, 1893.

Prime Minister and Member of the Australian House of Representatives

After his return to Tasmania, Braddon was re-elected to the House of Assembly for the Free Trade Party on December 13, 1893, where he again represented the constituency of West Devon until his renewed resignation on March 29, 1901 . At the same time he was again the opposition leader in 1894.

Shortly thereafter, Braddon succeeded Conservative Henry Dobson as Prime Minister of Tasmania on April 14, 1894 and held the post of Prime Minister until he was replaced by Conservative Elliott Lewis on October 12, 1899. During his tenure, he was last from January 1 to October 12, 1899 also Minister of Finance (Treasurer) and Postmaster General (Postmaster General) .

After finishing his tenure as Prime Minister he was again opposition leader in the House of Assembly between 1899 and 1901.

After leaving the House of Assembly, he successfully ran for a seat in the Australian House of Representatives in 1901 and, at 71 years and nine months, was the oldest elected member of the House to date. He first represented the constituency of Tasmania and lastly from 1903 until his death the constituency of Wilmot .

For his many years of service, he was initially beaten to the Knight Bachelor and then carried the suffix "Sir". He later also became Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (KCMG).
