Albert Edgar Solomon (born March 7, 1876 in Longford , Tasmania , † October 5, 1914 in Hobart , Tasmania) was a politician of the Anti Socialist Party (ASP) and the Commonwealth Liberal Party (CLP), who was Prime Minister of 1912-1914 Tasmania was.

Life

MP and Minister

Solomon completed after school to study law at the University of Tasmania and was then as a lawyer working.

On April 30, 1909, he was elected as a candidate for the Anti Socialist Party in the Bass constituency for the first time as a member of the House of Representatives (Tasmanian House of Assembly) , the lower house of the Tasmanian Parliament, and was a member of this until his death on October 5, 1914.

Shortly after the election, on June 19, 1909, Prime Minister Elliott Lewis appointed him as Attorney General and Minister for Education in a state government, which he held until the end of Lewis' second term on June 20. October 1909.

A week later, on October 27, 1909, after the brief week-long government of John Earle , the first Tasmanian government to be provided by the Australian Labor Party , Lewis returned to prime minister and reappointed Solomon as attorney general and minister of education and minister for mines ) .

Prime Minister 1912 to 1914 and leader of the opposition

In the April 30, 1912 election, Prime Minister Lewis’s Commonwealth Liberal Party got 40,252 votes (54.48 percent) and 16 seats, while Earles Labor Party received 33,634 votes (45.52 percent) and 14 seats. Despite the election victory, there was internal criticism of Lewis, whereupon Lewis resigned on June 14, 1912 and Solomon became the new Prime Minister. Solomon continued to serve as Attorney General and Minister of Education in his administration.

In the subsequent early elections on January 23, 1913, there were no changes in the distribution of seats. The CLP under Solomon received 36,157 votes (52.58 percent) and 16 seats and the Labor Party received 31,633 votes (46 percent) and 14 seats in the 30-member House of Assembly.

After there was a vote of no confidence in Prime Minister Solomon in April 1914 and the Governor of Tasmania , William Ellison-Macartney , refused to dissolve parliament again to hold early elections, Earle became Prime Minister for the second time on April 6, 1914, while Solomon was opposition leader in the House of Assembly and held this position until his death on October 5, 1914.
