Harry Holgate

Harold "Harry" Norman Holgate AO (born December 5, 1933 in Maitland , New South Wales , † March 16, 1997 in Launceston , Tasmania ) was an Australian politician of the Australian Labor Party (ALP), who was Prime Minister of Tasmania between 1981 and 1982 was.

Life

Holgate completed an undergraduate degree after attending school , which he completed with a Bachelor of Arts . He then worked as a journalist .

As a candidate of the Australian Labor Party, he was elected for the first time on July 26, 1974 in the constituency of Bass as a member of the House of Representatives (Tasmanian House of Assembly) , the lower house of the Tasmanian Parliament, and was a member of this until his resignation on February 1, 1992. In his first election, he succeeded Allan John Foster , who had also resigned as Minister after a traffic accident.

Already on May 27, 1975 Holgate was to succeed Eric Barnard Speaker of the House (Speaker of the House of Assembly) and held thus until his replacement by Glen Davies on 21 December 1976, the President of Parliament.

In 1979 Prime Minister Doug Lowe appointed him to a state government as Minister for Police and Emergency Services . After a cabinet reshuffle in 1981, he took over the offices of Minister for Water Resources , Minister for the Environment and Minister for Local Government .

After a vote of no confidence in Prime Minister Lowe, Holgate became Prime Minister himself on November 11, 1981, and at the same time took over from Lowe as Treasurer .

He held these offices until May 26, 1982 after his party had suffered a loss to the Liberal Party of Australia (LPA) in the general election on May 15, 1982 . While the LPA had 121,346 votes (48.52 percent) and received 19 of the 35 seats in the House of Assembly, the ALP only received 92,184 votes (36.86 percent), so that it lost 6 of its 20 seats to date. Robin Gray then became Prime Minister .

For his political services he was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Australia on March 11, 1983 .

After the Labor Party's victory in the parliamentary elections on May 13, 1989, Holgate was reappointed to the cabinet by Prime Minister Michael Field on July 3, 1989, initially as Minister for Tourism, Racing and Gaming and then from July 17, 1989 to the end of Field's term on February 17, 1992, as Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation . At the same time he was Minister for Roads and Transport from October 10, 1990 to February 8, 1991 and subsequently Minister for Parks, Wildlife and Heritage from February 8, 1991 to February 17, 1992 (Minister for Parks, Wildlife and Heritage) .
