John Alcorn

John Alcorn (born February 10, 1935 in Corona , Queens ; † January 27, 1992 in New London , Connecticut ) was an American graphic designer and illustrator . He designed and illustrated numerous books and book titles (mainly children's books ), posters and packaging. Alcorn's work has received several international awards.

Life

John Alcorn studied at the Cooper Union in New York , where he initially dealt with architecture , calligraphy , typography and drawing, later he specialized in graphic design, illustration and advertising . He worked for Esquire and the renowned Push Pin Studio founded by Seymour Chwast , Milton Glaser , Reynold Ruffins and Edward Sorel . In 1958 Alcorn went to CBS as a graphic designer for a year and then went into business for himself. In the following years he concentrated on book illustrations. In the early 1960s he moved to Ossining New York with his wife Phyllis . The book Books! by Murray McCain was recognized by the American Institute of Graphic Arts (now AIGA) in 1962. In 1971 he moved with his family to Florence , where he designed numerous books for the Rizzoli publishing house. In 1977 he returned to the USA and settled in Cold Spring , north of New York . In 1983 he went to Lyme , Connecticut.

John Alcorn died of a heart attack in 1992. He left behind his wife Phyllis and three sons.

Awards

John Alcorn has received numerous awards, including from the New York Art Directors Club , the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the Type Directors Club , the Society of Illustrators , the Bologna Children's Book Fair and the Cooper Union. His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions. He had solo exhibitions in New York, Milan and Paris .
