Phyllis McGinley

Phyllis Louise McGinley (* 21st March 1905 in Ontario , Oregon ; † 22. February 1978 in New York City , New York ) was an American poet and children's books author , in 1961 for her poetry collection Times Three: Selected Verse From Three Decades received the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry .

Life

Phyllis McGinley became a half-orphan at the age of three after the death of her father in 1908. After attending school, she began studying at the University of Southern California and then at the University of Utah , which she graduated in 1927. In 1934, her first volume of poetry, On the Contrary , was published, followed by numerous other volumes of her lyrical works. In 1937 she married Charles Hayden. In addition to her poetic works, she also published several books with children's and youth literature from the mid-1940s, and also volumes with essays from the late 1950s .

Phyllis McGinley received the 1961 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for her volume of poetry Times Three: Selected Verse From Three Decades , published in 1960 . Her children's book Wonderful Time , published in 1966, was illustrated by John Alcorn , while composer Mira J. Spektor set texts by Colette Inez and her to music with Three Songs for Baritone . In 2000, Three painters: for medium voice and piano by the composer Richard Wilson was another setting of her poems.

In 1955 she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters .
