Jorge Vera-Cruz Barbosa (born May 25, 1902 in Praia , † January 6, 1971 in Cova da Piedade ) was a Cape Verdean writer and poet .

Jorge Barbosa was born in 1902 in the city of Praia on the island of Santiago in what was then the Portuguese colony of Cape Verde . He soon moved to the island of São Vicente , where - apart from his academic years in Lisbon - he spent his early years.

His second book, Ambiente also The Circle , was published in 1941. The third was a notebook in 1955 under the title Caderno de um Ilhéu . This later won the Camilo Pessanha Prize.

In addition to the books, he published poems such as Meio Milémiio , Júbilo ( anniversary ), Panfletário ( booklet ) and Prelúdio ( prelude ). He then lived for several years on the island of Sal and worked there as an employee in the customs house. He died in 1971 in Cova da Piedade in Lisbon.

reception

The publication of his first work, the anthology Arquipélago ( Archipelago ) in 1935 is seen as the beginning of an independent Cape Verdean poetry . With Baltasar Lopes da Silva and Manuel Lopes , he founded the literary magazine Claridade ( Clarity ) in 1963, which marks the beginning of modern Cape Verdean literature. The Escola Jorge Barbosa school in Mindelo on São Vicente is named after him. A street in the south of Praia (Avenida Jorge Barbosa) is named after him, as is the municipal library of the town of Espargos in Sal.

His poem Tchapeu di padja was set to music by Simentera in the album Cabo Verde em serenada in 2000 . In 2003, Barbosa was featured on a Cape Verdean postage stamp.

His poem Prelúdio was published on the CD Poesia de Cabo Verde e Sete Poemas de Sebastião da Gama by Afonso Dias .
