Escola Jorge Barbosa

The Escola Jorge Barbosa is a school in the east of Mindelo on the Cape Verde island of São Vicente . It is located east of the city center in the Fonte Cônego district . It is named after the Cape Verdean writer Jorge Barbosa and is now a campus of the University of Cape Verde . Rua Franz Fanon is to the north and Avenida Fernando Ferreira Forte to the south . To the west, the building is separated from the former governor's palace, today's Palácio de Povo , by a small park with a monument to Adriano Durante (1892–1961) .

The rectangular building consists of an east wing in the late colonial style and a modern west wing.

history

The school was founded in 1921 by the Portuguese as Liceu Nacional de Infante D. Henrique . Damas it was the third Lyceum in Cape Verde. It was later renamed Liceu Gil Eanes in honor of the discoverer of São Vicente Island, Gil Eanes . After the independence of Cape Verde, it got its current name.

The school played an important role in Cape Verdean nationalism before independence.

In 2005 the school had 1,593 students. Today it is a campus of the University of Cape Verde.
