Cova da Piedade is a place and a former municipality ( Freguesia ) in the Portuguese district of Almada . 19,849 inhabitants lived in the municipality (as of June 30, 2011). The place belongs to the metropolitan area of the city of Almada.

history

The first evidence of permanent settlement comes from the period after the medieval Reconquista . The small town was called Cova ( Portuguese for: sink, pit) because of its location .

The first church in the town was dedicated to Our Lady of Compassion ( Nossa Senhora da Piedade ). The current place name arose from the connection between Cova and the patron saint . The church was destroyed in the Lisbon earthquake in 1755 and rebuilt in 1762.

Cova da Piedade became an independent parish in the Almada district in 1928. In the course of the reorganization of the parishes in 2013 , the parish was dissolved again and joined the new overall parish of Almada, Cova da Piedade, Pragal e Cacilhas .

Cova da Piedade was the seat of a municipality of the same name ( Freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Almada, in the Setúbal district . The municipality had 19,849 inhabitants on an area of ​​1.42 km² (2011 figures).

The community consisted only of the place of the same name.

In the course of the territorial reform of September 29, 2013 , the municipalities of Cova da Piedade, Almada , Cacilhas and Pragal were combined to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Almada, Cova da Piedade, Pragal e Cacilhas .

Cova da Piedade is part of the Sul do Tejo (MST) metro network. The light rail is an important means of transport on the Margem Sul do Tejo , two lines stop in Cova da Piedade.

Sports

The most famous sports club in the former municipality is the CD Cova da Piedade, founded in 1947 . He has played in the country's second division, the Segunda League , since 2017 .

The club plays its home games in the Estádio Municipal José Martins Vieira stadium, which has a capacity of 3,500 .
