Charneca de Caparica is a place and a former municipality on the Setúbal peninsula in Portugal .

history

The place arose after the foundation of the Convento de Nossa Senhora da Rosa (originally Convento da Cela-Velha ) in 1410.

Around 1559, the Jesuits acquired land here and built further commercial and residential buildings there.

From around 1569 Fernão Mendes Pinto lived on the local estate Quinta de Vale do Rosal .

After some clergymen fled here from the plague in Lisbon as early as 1570, some wealthy residents of the capital also sought protection from the rampant diseases in the capital after the earthquake in Lisbon in 1755 .

The independent municipality of Charneca de Caparica was founded on October 4, 1985, when it was separated from the municipality of Caparica .

On July 2, 1993 Charneca de Caparica was elevated to a small town ( Vila ).

In the course of the regional reform in 2013, the municipality was then merged with Sobreda to form a new municipality.
