Caparica is a former Portuguese municipality in the Almada district and thus belonged to the Setúbal district in the Lisboa region . The community had 20,447 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011) on 11 km². The administrative seat was in the city of Monte de Caparica.
geography
The municipality of Caparica was bordered in the north by the Tagus River , in the west by the municipalities of Trafaria and Costa da Caparica , in the east by Pragal and in the south by the municipalities of Sobreda and Charneca da Caparica . The municipality should not be confused with the neighboring Costa da Caparica (bathing beach); the city does not have a beach by the sea, but you can swim in the Tejo. The place was elevated to Vila on September 27, 1985, the city being given the official name Monte da Caparica (the name of a locality in the municipality to distinguish it from the neighboring Costa da Caparica).
history
The history of the place goes back to the Roman rule . Caparica must have had a similar value for the Romans as Alcochete , Montijo or Sesimbra since these places were crossed.
The community was founded in 1472 by a papal bull by Sixtus IV .
With the territorial reform of September 29, 2013 , the municipalities of Caparica and Trafaria were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Caparica e Trafaria .
Place name
The word Caparica derives apparently from the Latin Cappar, cappari or capparis off, which in turn comes from the Greek kapparis and Kaper means. Caparica would have been an important place for capers. According to experts, the Latin derivation is the most likely, but it cannot be ruled out that the name comes from the Arabic al-kabbara, which in turn comes from Latin.
