Maltese tower
The Malteserturm is a four-story building in the Grisons capital Chur . The building in the southwest of the old town, near the Obertor , is part of the oldest city fortifications, which were damaged in the city fire in 1464 and rebuilt in the first half of the 16th century. The lower part of the late medieval tower shows the Bollenstein work typical of the city fortifications of the 13th century, in the upper part the quarry stone masonry built after 1464 and is covered with a tent roof. The structure of the building has been preserved intact since its reconstruction in the 16th century.
Surname
Contrary to popular belief, the Maltese Tower has nothing to do with the Order of Malta . The origin of today's name is in the dark. In earlier times the name Powder Tower was more common and was explained by its use as a municipal magazine for gunpowder .
