The Obertor with the new roundabout created in 2010

The Obertor in the Graubünden canton capital Chur is a listed city gate and with its four-story tower is a relic of the high medieval city fortifications that were removed in the 19th century and which go back to the first half of the 13th century. Extensively restored on the outside for the last time in 1949, it is located directly at the Plessurbrücke at the entrance to the old town and formed the southwestern exit of the city, where the last cargo handling took place on Ochsenplatz, which is located in the city center.

The upper part of the tower, which tapers towards the top and is decorated with the colors of the Chur city coat of arms, crowned by a roof turret from the 17th century, was only built later for representative purposes.

Located on a neuralgic inner-city transit axis, the Schanfiggerstrasse to Arosa begins at the Obertor, the roundabout in front of the 2010/11 gate will be significantly expanded to increase traffic safety and accelerate the flow of traffic. The aim is to upgrade the Obertor as one of the landmarks of the city of Chur. The nearby Malteserturm is also part of the composition of the Obertor .

The Obertor has been the departure point of the Churer Maiensässfahrt since 1854 .
