geography
Trafaria is part of the urban area of Margem Sul do Tejo (German: south bank of the Tejo). Afforestation has been carried out to protect the dunes, but also the land.
history
Originally probably a fishing village, a military hospital was opened here in 1565 . Some fortifications testify to the strategic importance of the place, at the entrance of the Tejo Delta, the gateway to the capital Lisbon .
On January 24, 1777, the place was burned down on the orders of the Marquês de Pombal , as numerous young men were hiding here from military service. The place was then rebuilt. A dynamite factory was opened here in 1873.
On October 7, 1926, the parish (Freguesia) of Trafaria was created, and on September 26, 1985 the place was elevated to Vila .
With the territorial reform of September 29, 2013 , the municipalities of Trafaria and Caparica were finally merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Caparica e Trafaria .
economy
Despite its decreased importance, fisheries are still a notable factor, especially mussel fishing. In addition to various companies in the manufacturing industry , trade and social institutions, tourism and the facilities of the Portuguese Navy , which maintains their ships here, are also important.
