history

The seafarer, explorer and author Fernão Mendes Pinto from Montemor-o-Velho spent his old age in Pragal and wrote his much-noticed travel memories before he died here in 1583.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, Pragal experienced some economic boom due to wine growing, before a phylloxera plague in the 19th century largely put an end to this here. With the advent of industrialization at the end of the 19th century, the decline continued as many of the smallholders became workers and the community increasingly deteriorated. The self-help institutions established by the workers at the beginning of the 20th century represented an improvement, including the consumer cooperative ( Cooperativa de Consumo , 1918) and the leisure and cultural association ( Sociedade Recreativa União Pragalense , 1919). After the Carnation Revolution in 1974, a radical change began, due to increased investments by the new democratic government in education, health and transport infrastructure. In 1991 the Hospital Garcia de Orta was opened.

Since 1985 Pragal was an independent municipality in Almada County. With the territorial reform of 2013 , Pragal was merged with other municipalities to form the new municipality of Almada, Cova da Piedade, Pragal e Cacilhas .
