The Pragal station is located on the Linha do Sul in the municipality Pragal in Portuguese Setúbal . It is owned by Fertagus and is served by Comboios de Portugal (CP) with long-distance trains and by Fertagus with local trains.

history

The station was opened to traffic on July 30, 1999 as one of six new Linha do Sul stations when it was extended from Pinhal Novo over Ponte 25 de Abril to Campolide station in Lisbon . The construction costs came to around 26 million euros, and the station was provided with numerous sculptures and tile cladding. It has also been served by CP trains since 2004, after the CP had decided to use the Linha do Sul trains - especially long-distance trains from the Algarve - instead of Barreiro , where it was necessary to take the Tejo ferry to Lisbon Fertagus route to Lisbon. However, the CP offer only contains a few long-distance connections, regional traffic continues to end in Barreiro or Pinhal Novo. In autumn 2006, new Intercidades connections between Lisbon and the hinterland of the Alentejo (Béja and Évora) were added. In 2007 the station was connected to the Sul do Tejo Metro (MST), which connects it with the cities of the Margem Sul do Tejo . Between 2010 and 2011, the Intercidades connections in the Alentejo were interrupted due to construction work and were replaced by direct buses between Lisbon and Évora or Béja via Ponte Vasco da Gama . With the restart of the Linha do Alentejo, two additional pairs of trains were introduced to Évora, but all direct trains to Béja were canceled, the IC route was shortened to the Casa Branca – Béja route, with a connection to the Lisbon – Évora IC.

Location and importance

The station is located near the southern bridgehead of the Ponte 25 de Abril in the municipality of Pragal. It connects the cities of Cacilhas and Almada to the Portuguese railway network and is connected to them by bus and Metro Sul do Tejo . The Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia of the New University of Lisbon , which is domiciled on Monte Caparica , can also be reached via MST. Due to its proximity to the A2 motorway , it is provided with a Park & Ride parking lot for 1900 cars, which is intended to encourage the residents of the Margem Sul do Tejo to leave the car and instead take the train to Lisbon, especially since the Ponte 25 de Abril very much is at risk of congestion. A shopping center with 40 shops is also integrated into the station.
