geography

The place belongs to the industrial area south of the Tejo , opposite the capital Lisbon . To the south the area merges into the nature reserve of the Serra da Arrábida .

history

The Roman settlement of Equabona existed here . The Moors called the place Quabna and built a castle here. The place name changed over the centuries via Cauna and Couna to today's Coina.

The Real Fábrica de Vidros de Coina , the "Royal Glass Factory of Coina", was founded here in 1719 , where fine glass, but also mirrors and crystals for the needs of the country's mansions were manufactured. It was one of the few attempts to promote technical advances and economically productive development at a time when the ruling classes of Portugal limited themselves to mainly spending gold imports from the colony of Brazil and importing luxury goods. After numerous renovations and reorganizations took place in the factory area in the following epochs, archaeological excavations were necessary between 1983 and 1990 to uncover the remains of the factory. A museum with an extensive exhibition has been set up.

economy

Numerous industrial companies are located here.

Attractions

In addition to the Museum Real Fábrica de Espelhos e Vidros Cristalinos de Coina , the stake ("Pelourinho"), the Palácio de Coina castle , and various churches and early industrial sites (e.g. the lime kiln from the 18th century) are also worth seeing Wetlands on the Rio Coina , which, like the river, have their origins in the nearby Serra da Arrábida nature reserve .
