Francisco Simões (* 1946 in Porto Brandão , Freguesia Caparica ) is a Portuguese sculptor and draftsman .

Life

Francisco Simões comes from a family of fishermen. He attended the António Arroio Art School in Lisbon until 1965 , studied graphics in Italy at the age of 19 with a scholarship from the OECD and then sculpture at the Academia de Música e Belas Artes in Funchal on Madeira until 1974 . He was a consultant at the Portuguese Ministry of Education (Ministério da Educação e Ciência). In 1996 a secondary school in Laranjeiro near Almada was named after him.

Francisco Simões has lived in Sintra since 1991 .

His public statues include, for example, the bronze busts of José Maria Eça de Queiroz and the poet Afonso Duarte from 2000 and 2001, which are in the Penedo de Saudade Park in Coimbra . In Lisbon Rato Metro Station are his bronze busts of Arpad Szenes and his wife Maria Helena Vieira da Silva in 2002, the marble statues in the subway station Campo Pequeno he also drew up. His bronze monument by Teófilo Braga from 2004 is in Alfornelos , his marble monument to the priest Fernando Martins from 2008 is in Oeiras . In the government palace of the Azores in Ponta Delgada is his marble monument A Açoreana (German: The Woman of the Azores). Some of his works can also be found in the concelho (district) Vila Franca de Xira : the bronze sculpture Mulher (German: Woman) from 2003 in Forte da Casa , there in the city park the Azulejos Tres Graças (German: Three Graces) and Quatro Estações (German: Vier Jahreszeiten) from 2004, in Alhandra a marble bust of the swimmer Baptista Pereira (* 1921; † 1984) born there from 2006. In 2012, his statue Amor de Perdição was erected in Porto , based on the novel of the same name by Camilo Castelo Branco based.
