Laranjeiro is a former municipality in western Portugal . Laranjeiro in the Almada district in the Setúbal district , has an area of ​​3.88 km² and had 20,823 inhabitants on June 30, 2011. The municipality was merged with the municipality of Feijó to form the Freguesia União das Freguesias de Laranjeiro e Feijó as part of the regional reform of September 29, 2013 .

history

Since the independence of the Kingdom of Portugal and the handover to the Order of Santiago by King Dom Sancho I in 1186, today's municipality has changed hands again and again, including various orders and illustrious knights such as Nuno Álvares Pereira . It was divided into smaller and smaller territories until King Dom João IV began in 1641 to take territories back into royal possession. Until 1834, the current municipality was roughly merged.

From February 7, 1928, Laranjeiro belonged to the municipality of Cova da Piedade until it became an independent municipality on October 4, 1985.

The palace complex Palácio do Alfeite (also Paço Real do Alfeite ) from the 17th century goes back to a property from the 14th century, and now houses the naval headquarters for the Lisbon region. It is a listed building.

In Laranjeiro, monuments to solidarity ( Monumento à Solidariedade ) and brotherhood ( Monumento à Fraternidade ) were erected in Laranjeiro in the 1990s , as well as a barrel-shaped marble monument decorated with azulejos ( Conjunto Escultórico Alusivo ao Barril D'Alva ), to commemorate the efforts and achievements of the local people.

The 19th century mansion Quinta de Santo Amaro shows classicist features on the facade and inside, especially with the azulejos . Today it houses u. a. a youth culture center and has been a listed building since 2001.

The Estádio Municipal José Martins Vieira stadium is located in the municipal area. The second division soccer club CD Cova da Piedade from neighboring Cova da Piedade plays its home games here.

Sul do Tejo metro stop in Laranjeiro

The local transport company Transportes Sul do Tejo is based here, as are some industrial companies. The Portuguese Navy maintains one of its most important bases here, the Base Naval do Alfeite .
