Campo Pequeno is a metro station on the Linha Amarela of the Lisbon Metro , the subway network of the Portuguese capital . The station is located in the Lisbon municipality of Nossa Senhora de Fátima at the intersection of Avenida da República and Avenida de Berna and southeast of the square of the same name , on which the Praça de Touros do Campo Pequeno bullring stands. The neighboring stations are Saldanha and the regional and suburban train station Entre Campos . The station went into operation on December 29, 1959, together with ten other stations, as the first in Lisbon.

history

The subway station Campo Pequeno , in English Small Field , is one of the first of the Lisbon Metro, along with ten other train stations in Lisbon, and was opened on December 29, 1959. Here was Campo Pequeno , the penultimate station on the Wye-like network that at the Lisbon Old Town Station Restauradores began and at the railway station Rotunda toward Sete Rios and Entre Campos branched. The station itself, like almost all other stations, was designed by the Portuguese architect João Falcão e Cunha : two side platforms, at that time still 40 meters long and designed for 10,000 passengers per hour. As with the other ten train stations, Maria Keil was responsible for the artistic design . For this station she chooses azulejos with white and ocher-colored oblique lines on a light blue background. The surfaces are partially filled with white and black so that they appear to form crystals.

The number of passengers in the entire Lisbon metro network has risen sharply over the years - also due to the discontinuation of the trams that run in parallel - so that the network with its 40-meter-long platforms soon reached its capacity limit. For this reason, the Lisbon city administration had the platforms gradually extended to 105 meters so that six-car trains could be used. This was the case at Campo Pequeno station in 1978/79, and on March 29, 1979, the station was expanded to the south. The architect Benoliel de Carvalho was in charge of the expansion, while Maria Keil continued to be responsible for the design.

In 1994 the station was completely renovated under the direction of the architect Duarte Nuno Simões . The Portuguese sculptor Francisco Simões also took part , who based his sculptures on the historical background of the place. There were always numerous markets in the vicinity of the bullring, where the local population sold their cars. He represented them with different figures, each one carved from different types of Portuguese marble. The Lioz marble from Pêro Pinheiro, the bluish marble from Maceira, the yellow marble from Negrais, the black from Mem Martins, the green marble from Viana do Alentejo, the gray from Trigaches, the blue from Bahia (Brazil ). The redesign lasted until December 29, 1994.

In 1996 the station was given direct access to the newly opened bullring through the construction of an underground shopping center ( Centro Comercial do Campo Pequeno ). To date, the station has no elevator and only stone stairs to leave the station, so that it is not considered handicapped accessible.
