description

The Avenida was laid out in the course of the northern expansion of the city at the end of the 19th century and forms the central axis of Avenidas Novas . On May 3, 1897, it was named Avenida das Picoas , after the Quinta das Picoas that was located at this point. In 1904 it was named after the creator of Avenidas Novas Ressano Garcia . The day after the proclamation of the Republic on October 5, 1910, the Câmara Municipal of Lisbon decided on the current name in the course of several street renaming.

Numerous branches of large companies and trading companies are located on Avenida da República. The proportion of the resident population is low. The former bullring Praça de Touros do Campo Pequeno and the site of the former Feira Popular are also on the road.

It is accessible by three underground stations of the Linha Amarela of the metro : Saldanha , Campo Pequeno and Entrecampos as well as the regional train station Entrecampos .
