history
Just like the Quinta das Conchas , Lumiar , Senhor Roubado and Odivelas subway stations, the Ameixoeira subway station is part of the latest section of the Linha Amarela of the Lisbon Metro, which opened on March 27, 2004. This is the first time that the Ameixoeira district has a rail link. The subway station's planning name was Quinta das Lavadeiras .
The train station was designed by the architect Robert McFadden . The construction is considered to be one of the more demanding ones in the Lisbon metro network due to the length of the slope and the depth of the metro line. From the platforms to the single mezzanine floor with its exits, there is a large difference in height to be overcome. Therefore, the station has numerous escalators in addition to the mandatory elevator. The station itself received the usual 105 meter long side platforms. The metro operating company chose the artist Irene Buarque for the design . In view of the “cylindrical” shape of the train station, she decided to depict different geometric figures (spheres, cuboids, cubes) on the usual tiles in different colors.
