Picoas is a metro station on the Linha Amarela of the Lisbon Metro , the subway network of the Portuguese capital . The station is located at the intersection of Rua Tomás Ribeiro / Avenida Fontes Pereira de Melo and thus directly on the border between the two municipalities of Avenidas Novas and Arroios . The neighboring stations of the train station are Marquês de Pombal and Saldanha . The station went into operation on December 29, 1959 as one of the eleven stations of the original Lisbon network.

history

The Lisbon city administration officially opened the Picoas station on December 29, 1959 in connection with the complete commissioning of the Lisbon subway network between Restauradores , Sete Rios and Entre Campos . The train station, which like all Lisbon subway stations has two side platforms, was given the usual architectural design like all other subway stations. The station itself was designed by the Portuguese architect João Falcão e Cunha , while Maria Keil was responsible for the architectural design . Keil chose different shades of blue, green and white for the usual azulejo patterns.

In connection with the expansion of the Lisbon Metro, the number of passengers also rose significantly. In order to ensure continued good operating quality, the operating company decided from 1972 to standardize the platforms, whose length had previously varied between 40 and 70 meters, to 105 meters. At the Picoas underground station , work began in 1981 and lasted until November 9, 1982, with the southern access to the station being postponed. Benoliel de Carvalho was responsible for planning and developing the station extension .

In 1994 the two platforms and the entrances were completely renovated under the direction of Dinis Gomes . The artist Martins Correia chose the Lisbon women as the theme for the redesign of the train station. Various working women can be seen along the platform walls - shop assistants, fisherwomen, etc. To create a connection to Lisbon, the black and white Lisbon flag and the city coat of arms consisting of a ship with two ravens are stylized. For the northern exit, Martins designed a statue of Pomona , the Greek goddess of the fruit blessing.

For the redesign, the operating company of the Paris Métro , RATP , donated one of the well-known Guimard entrances to the Picoas subway station . These graceful entrances in the Art Nouveau style are characteristic of the Paris Métro and have only been given away to other companies in exceptional cases, including the Montreal Metro . The Guimard access replaced the previous southern one, which leads to Rua Andrade Corvo .

Since the station currently only has stone stairs to leave the platform, it is not considered to be barrier-free. The installation of elevators is only planned for the medium to long term.
