The Avenida Fontes Pereira de Melo is a main thoroughfare in the center of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon . It leads from Praça Marquês de Pombal over 900 meters in a north-easterly direction to Praça Duque de Saldanha .
history
The street is one of the five axes that lead from Praça Marquês de Pombal. It was laid out in 1900 according to the Plano das Avenidas Novas by the engineer Ressano Garcia , which was approved by the Lisbon City Council in 1888. The aim of this was, in the spirit of the urban planning ideas of the late 19th century, to present the densely populated quarters from the time of industrialization with a grid of structural axes with uniform block development. The Avenida Fontes Pereira de Melo connected the settlement core of Picoas / Campo Grande to the Parque da Liberdade (today: Parque Eduardo VII ). It was named on December 11, 1902 after the statesman António Maria de Fontes Pereira de Melo (1819–1887), Prime Minister during the period of Fontism .
In terms of traffic, the Avenida is served by the subway stations Marquês de Pombal , Picoas and Saldanha as well as several bus routes.
art
Street art artists Blu and Os Gêmeos painted a corner building near Picoas underground station in 2010 as part of Projecto Crono with two murals critical of capitalism , which the Guardian voted among the ten best street art works worldwide. The artist Ericailcane provided another facade with a huge crocodile.
