Marquês de Pombal - until 1998 Rotunda - is a subway station of the Linha Azul and Linha Amarela of the Lisbon Metro , the subway network of the Portuguese capital . It is located under the square of the same name with the roundabout Praça Marquês de Pombal , the neighboring stations are Parque , Avenida , Picoas and Rato . The station, which is located on the border between Avenidas Novas and Santo António , went into operation on December 29, 1959 as one of the eleven stations of the original Lisbon network.

History and architecture

The Metropolitano de Lisboa officially opened the Marquês de Pombal station - at that time still under the name Rotunda - on December 29, 1959, together with the complete commissioning of the Lisbon subway network between Restauradores , Sete Rios and Entre Campos . From the beginning, Rotunda station was the only branching station of the Y-network, at the station the two line branches in the direction of Sete Rios and Entre Campos separated .

The station itself was designed by the two architects Francisco Keil do Amaral , who designed most of the stations in Lisbon, and João Falcão e Cunha . The two 4.20-meter-wide side platforms of the station were the only ones in the network, alongside those of the Rossio station, that were designed for 70 meters from the beginning, i.e. for 20,000 passengers per hour. Maria Keil was commissioned with the artistic design; for the Rotunda train station she chose green-blue tiles with spiral shapes.

The number of passengers increased considerably over the years due to numerous extensions, so that the existing Y-network with two branches did not appear to be useful. Rotunda station was the bottleneck that had to take the trains from the two branches towards Sete Rios and Entre Campos. Therefore, the operating company Metropolitano de Lisboa, EP decided on the so-called Plano de Expansão da Rede 1999 (plan to expand the network by 1999), in which the separation of the two branches was proposed. The implementation of the plan took place until July 1995, it brought with it momentous renovation work at the Rotunda station . The previous station remained and was now used by the newly introduced Colégio Militar - Campo Grande line via Rossio ; the new station for the Rotunda – Campo Grande line via Entre Campos was built at an acute angle under Avenida Fontes Perreira de Melo .

In the 1999 expansion plan, the Metropolitano de Lisboa also gave significantly more space to the artistic design of the metropolitan train stations. Therefore she commissioned various artists to use and design the redesign of the station. João Cutileiro , sculptor from Lisbon, was responsible for the old train station, the artist Menez for the new train station and João Charters de Almeida for the newly created connecting tunnel between the two parts of the train station. Cutileiro created a statue of the Marquês de Pombal , who is also on the surface and has considerable significance for the history of Lisbon. The statue stands between the two side platforms of the blue lines, the marquis is holding a scroll that is believed to represent the new plans for the rebuilding of the city after the earthquake of 1755 . The artist Menez also devoted herself to the Marquis of Pombal, on the azulejos customary in Portugal she depicted various events during the time of the Marquis (assassination attempt on King José, earthquake, reconstruction of the city, persecution of the Jesuits, etc.) The tiles were made in the factory Fábrica de Cerâmica Viúva Lamego . In the corridor between the two train stations, João Charters de Almeida designed his idea of ​​a Cidade Imaginária (in German Imaginary City ) with the help of stone engravings. As part of the renovation work, the station was one of the few elevators in the city center.

In March 1998, as part of a major wave of renaming, the station was renamed Marquês de Pombal , after the above-ground square of the same name .

Today the station is an important traffic junction in the Portuguese capital. In addition to the two underground lines, numerous bus lines from various bus companies also meet at the underground station.
