Rato is a subway station of the Linha Amarela of the Lisbon Metro , the subway network of the Portuguese capital , also the western terminus of the line. The train station is located under Largo do Rato in the municipality of São Mamede . The only neighboring station to the station is Marquês de Pombal . The station went into operation on December 29, 1997.

history

By 1995, the operating company Metropolitano de Lisboa had the Marquês de Pombal subway station rebuilt so that two separate lines could be formed from the previously Y-type subway network with the two branches to Colégio Militar and Cidade Universitária . Since the approval of the expansion plan for the Lisbon Metro in 1990, a perspective extension of the new Linha Amarela to the banks of the Tejo in Alcântara was planned. The first step was to extend the line from Marquês de Pombal by one station to Largo do Rato . The Rato underground station was built under this until 1997 , and went into operation on December 29, 1997. This also gave the densely populated São Mamede subway connection. As one of the newer subway stations, there are also elevators from the platform to the surface.

The architect Carlos Sanchez Jorge was responsible for the design of the station, which has two side platforms . For the artistic design, the Árpád Szenès-Vieira da Silva Foundation proposed honoring the artist couple Árpád Szenès and Maria Helena Vieira da Silva . The operating company agreed and commissioned the artist Manuel Cargaleiro to transfer two works by the two painters onto azulejo pictures , which were to be displayed in the train station. Cagaleiro chose the painting Ville en Extension (1970) by Vieira da Silva and the painting Banquet (1930) by Szenès, both of which hang at the end of the platform hall. In addition to these two azulejo works, Cagaleiro also designed the platform rear walls with various geometric shapes. In the intermediate level there are also two bronze busts by the sculptor Francisco Simões , which are dedicated to the two artists.

In the long term, the Linha Amarela is to be extended to the new Alcântara station on the Linha de Cascais on the banks of the Tejo. The first phase of this extension consists, however, in the expansion of the route to the future Estrela underground station at Jardim do Estrela . Via an intermediate station Infante Santo near the Palácio das Necessidades the extension to Alcântara to the regional train station Lisbon Alcântara-Mar is planned.
