First edition of the "Vorarlberger Volkswacht"

Vorarlberger Wacht was the title of a Vorarlberg newspaper that appeared between 1910 and 1938. The political orientation of the newspaper, which was initially distributed with the addition of Organ for the Working People in Vorarlberg , was social democratic until 1934. After the Social Democratic Party was banned, the political orientation of the newspaper was adapted to the regime of the Fatherland Front on February 20, 1934 ( Austrofascism ).

history

The first edition of Vorarlberger Wacht appeared on January 5, 1910. The newspaper was published until 1923 by the owner and publisher, the Social Democratic Voters' Association for Vorarlberg , with Hermann Leibfried appearing in the imprint in 1918 as publisher and editor. With the edition of April 28, 1923, the Innsbruck book printing and publishing company took over Vorarlberger Wacht as printer, owner, publisher and publisher. From February 20, 1934, the Vorarlberger Wacht was published by Hubert Schneider & Co., and from September 22, 1934 by Josef Winkler & Co.

publication

Publication dates

The Vorarlberger Wacht initially appeared weekly (December 1918 to September 30, 1921) in six issues per week. The paper was discontinued from October 1, 1921 to April 18, 1923. Meanwhile, party news was published by the Tiroler Volkszeitung , which had the addition: social democratic daily newspaper for Tyrol and Vorarlberg . With the change to the Innsbruck book printing and publishing house, the newspaper was turned back into a weekly newspaper. As early as August 1, 1923, the publisher increased the number of issues to two per week (Wednesday and Saturday), and from June 5, 1927, three issues per week were published (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday). The Vorarlberger Wacht ceased on February 13, 1934. After the Social Democratic Workers' Party (SDAP) was banned , the Vorarlberger Wacht appeared every day from February 20, 1934 to March 12, 1938, but was now aligned in the spirit of Austrofascism and no longer a socialist party organ.

After the National Socialists came to power in Austria , the Vorarlberger Wacht was discontinued with the issue of March 12, 1938.

Additional title

The Vorarlberger Wacht appeared with alternating additional titles. The additional title Organ for the Working People in Vorarlberg was changed with the edition of January 11, 1920 to a social democratic daily paper for Vorarlberg . From April 28, 1923, the newspaper appeared with the additional title social democratic organ for the working people , from December 17, 1931 with the additional title social democratic organ for Vorarlberg . After the Social Democratic Party was banned, the addition was changed again and, from February 20, read Independent Organ for the Interests of Workers and Employees in Vorarlberg . However, a few days later the additional title was completely dispensed with.

Edition

In 1930 the circulation was around 1,800 copies per issue. The Vorarlberger Tagblatt , published at the same time, had around 4,000 copies per issue, the Vorarlberger Volksblatt around 6,000 to 8,000 copies per issue.
