history

Vorarlberg friend of the people

The Vorarlberger Volksfreund was founded in 1890 as a weekly newspaper that appeared once or twice a month. It was published by the Constitutional Association in Dornbirn, the last edition being published on December 23, 1897. The Vorarlberger Volksfreund then merged with the German-free-thinking Bregenzer Nachrichten to form the Vorarlberger Freie Rundschau . The first edition of the Vorarlberger Free Rundschau appeared on December 16, 1897 and was published by the responsible editor and publisher, Karl Merschinsky. The newspaper was initially produced six times a week. From December 1887 a weekly edition appeared on Saturdays, and from December 3, 1898 the newspaper was switched to a weekly edition. From March 2, 1898, the Vorarlberger Freie Rundschau appeared with the additional title German-free-spirited organ for the state of Vorarlberg . The Vorarlberger Rundschau appeared for the last time on March 18, 1899, after which it was merged with the Bregenzer Tagblatt to form the Vorarlberger Tagblatt . In 1901, however, the Vorarlberger Volksfreund was re-established, the first edition was published on March 22, 1901. The newspaper initially appeared once or twice a week, from 1906 the frequency of publication was increased to three issues per week and in November 1918 to six issues per week. From 1912 the German Freedom Association in Dornbirn acted as the author. The last edition of the Vorarlberger Volksfreund appeared on December 15, 1918, after which the newspaper went up in the Vorarlberger Tagblatt.

Vorarlberger Tagblatt

From the beginning, the paper was the central organ of the Greater German People's Party in Vorarlberg. After 1933, the newspaper tended more and more towards National Socialism , only to take a moderate course in the era of Austrofascism .

After the annexation of Austria, the Vorarlberger Tagblatt became the monopoly newspaper in Vorarlberg and in 1939 became the property of the NSDAP . The editors-in-chief included Hans Nägele , Karl Otto Dyllus and Ludwig Groß.

Media technical aspects

The Vorarlberger Tagblatt has been the most modern and technically innovative newspaper in the Vorarlberg media landscape at that time. With its circulation figures, it only took second place after the Vorarlberger Volksblatt , but the competitor had to keep lagging behind the rapid innovations with poorly made copies. From 1921 the newspaper in Vorarlberg appeared exclusively in the Berlin format , from 1922 it published a detailed business section every day and a women's supplement at weekly to bi-weekly intervals (pioneering in the Catholic-conservative-dominated Vorarlberg). The real heart, however, was the weekly supplement “Feierabend” , which offered a remarkably wide variety of cultural topics.

In 1939 the sheet had a circulation of 8,500 copies. It was finally discontinued on April 30, 1945.
