The Campo Pequeno (Eng .: Small Field ) is a square in the northern center of the Portuguese capital Lisbon .
It is located in the municipalities of Avenidas Novas and Areeiro at the intersection of Avenida da República and Avenida João XXI .
history
The square was laid out as a public area on the outskirts of the city in the early 16th century. It was used for parades and markets as well as a parade ground. King Sebastian's army was preparing there for the devastating battle of Alcácer-Quibir in 1578.
In the 18th century a makeshift arena for bullfights was built. It was replaced at the end of the 19th century by the Praça de Touros do Campo Pequeno , built according to plans by José António Dias da Silva , which was inaugurated on August 18, 1892.
On the south side of the square is the Palácio Galveias , built in the 17th century, which today houses the Biblioteca Municipal Palácio Galveias . In 2006 the Centro Comercial do Campo Pequeno shopping center and a car park were built under the square .
traffic
The square has been linked to the Lisbon metro network by the Campo Pequeno metro station since December 29, 1959 . It is the intersection of several Carris bus routes .
